How many calories are in chole?
A home-style katori of chole — about 150 g, roughly a cup — is 180 to 220 kcal. The chickpeas account for most of that. The oil accounts for most of the variation. And what the chole arrives with can triple the plate before you have touched anything else.
Per portion
| Portion | Calories | Protein | Carbs | Fat |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 100 g home-style chole | ~125 kcal | 5 g | 18 g | 4 g |
| 150 g katori, 1 tsp oil per serving | ~190 kcal | 8 g | 26 g | 6 g |
| 200 g restaurant-style chana masala | 300–400 kcal | 11 g | 35 g | 15–22 g |
| Chole with two roti | ~340 kcal | 13 g | 56 g | 9 g |
| Chole with one cup cooked rice | ~390 kcal | 12 g | 70 g | 7 g |
| Chole bhature, two bhature | 700–1,000 kcal | 20 g | 100–130 g | 35–60 g |
What changes the number
The oil, and nothing else is close. A tablespoon is about 120 kcal, and a pan of chole is routinely started with two or three. Spread over four servings, that is 60 to 90 kcal a bowl from the cooking medium alone, before any finishing ghee or butter. The same ladle of chole can honestly be 150 kcal or 350 kcal depending on who made it.
How much of the ladle is chickpea. A 200 g serving might hold 80 g of cooked chickpeas in a thin gravy or 150 g in a thick one — about 110 kcal apart for an identical-looking bowl.
The style. Pindi chole, the dark dry Rawalpindi version built on tea and anardana, generally takes less oil and no dairy. The bhuna onion-tomato masala takes more, because the masala has to be fried down. Restaurant chana masala often gets a spoon of butter or cream at the end.
What does not matter much. Canned versus home-boiled chickpeas is worth a few kcal either way, and soaking time, baking soda and cooker pressure change texture rather than energy.
Where it fits in a deficit
Chole is one of the better dishes to build a meal around. A 150 g serving carries roughly 8 g of protein and 7 g of fibre, it is mostly water by weight, and it keeps people full for hours — the combination that makes high-volume eating work rather than just feel virtuous.
The honest note is that chole is rarely the whole meal. It is a sauce for something, and the something is usually where the calories are. If you are eating less, measure the oil going into the pan once so you know your own baseline, then decide the carbohydrate alongside deliberately — which is most of what planning meals amounts to here.
Chole and what it arrives with
These are different foods and they belong in different mental slots.
A bhatura is deep-fried refined-flour bread: 250 to 320 kcal each, most of it oil absorbed during frying. Two of them are 500 to 650 kcal before the chole is served, which is why a restaurant plate of chole bhature lands near 1,000 and sits in the same bracket as a full pizza.
The same chole with one cup of rice is about 390 kcal. With two roti, about 340. With a bowl of lentils and salad instead of bread, under 350. That is a 650 kcal spread across one dish, decided entirely by the side.
Conflating the two is the most common error here. For the pulse on its own, without the masala, chickpeas are about 165 kcal per 100 g boiled.
